Activision has outlined the first season of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, with the update arriving at midnight ET on November 6, or 9 p.m. PT on November 5. The season brings new multiplayer maps and modes, a major DMZ expansion centered on the X01 facility, new weapons and operators, seasonal events, and deeper integration with Call of Duty: Warzone.

The publisher says a separate Warzone briefing and roadmap will follow on November 2. The current announcement focuses primarily on multiplayer, DMZ, weapons, events, and Battle Pass content.

Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 Release Date

Season 1 launches across all platforms at 12 a.m. ET on November 6. Players on the US West Coast can access it at 9 p.m. PT on November 5. Some content arrives before the main update: Shipment became available on October 27, Possession is scheduled for October 29, and Infected follows on October 30.

Activision also plans a midseason update, called Season 1 Reloaded, with additional maps, modes, events, and rewards.

Multiplayer Adds New Maps and Returning Favorites

Three maps are confirmed for the Season 1 launch:

  • Backstab: A new medium-sized 6v6 map set in a snow-covered, war-damaged town. Abandoned tanks, open buildings, rooftop positions, and destroyed walls create options for long sightlines and flanking routes.
  • Canyon: A new medium-sized 6v6 map built around sun-scorched terrain, towering rock formations, a river, cliff paths, caves, and elevated positions. Players will need to manage exposure across its open areas.
  • Shoot House: A reimagined version of the familiar 6v6 map, now set in North Korea during light snowfall. Its three main lanes run through the Junkyard, central tunnels, and Containers, with elevated positions around the Hospital and Apartment.

More maps are planned for the middle of the season. Ministry centers on fighting around a damaged embassy during a Global Peace Summit, while Overflow takes place around a factory and surrounding farmland. Activision says additional locations will be revealed later.

The featured Kill Block: Crash setup keeps all three slabs static between rounds. The combination, selected by Infinity Ward based on popular Modern Warfare 4 beta configurations, will also appear in other Core Multiplayer playlists, including Search and Destroy.

Shipment is already available as a preseason remaster. Its familiar compact layout has been moved to a Russian harbor and updated with Modern Warfare 4’s visual and gameplay systems.

New and Returning Multiplayer Modes

Possession arrives on October 29 as a new Halloween-themed party mode. Eliminating an opponent lets a player take over their position and loadout, creating opportunities to move quickly between objectives.

Infected returns on October 30. One player begins as infected, and each survivor they eliminate joins the infected team. Survivors must hold out while the infected side grows.

At Season 1 launch, players can also access Grind, which revolves around collecting enemy dog tags and depositing them at either of two banks, and Drop Zone, where teams compete for a rotating objective and airdropped Killstreak packages.

The Gauntlet 1v1 playlist is part of the Wager Match Event. Players use earned trophies to compete, with winners staying in the rotation to face another opponent. Activision says the event does not involve real money or items of real-world value.

More modes are planned for midseason, including Counter Attack, which asks teams to attack an enemy communications station while defending their own, alongside another mode that modifies the Team Deathmatch formula.

DMZ Expands With the X01 Black Site

Season 1 introduces X01, a previously undiscovered weapons facility near Hajin that has been seized by North Korean forces. The site is described as a former Russian facility with cargo bays, vehicle depots, underground laboratories, production lines, tunnels, and a sealed Deep Vault. Its layout and shifting hazards are designed to reward careful planning and squad coordination.

Ghost will guide players through new DMZ Orders as they explore the facility. Activision is keeping some enemies, equipment, and items classified for now, but confirms that X01 will include new threats, specialized gear, extraction challenges, and events.

The DMZ Forward Operating Base also receives new stations and improvements. Players can access Battle Pass and BlackCell content through a new station, buy additional weapons and gear from a vendor using DMZ Cash if they have Season 1 BlackCell, and pursue new boss information.

Named threats include Tae-Hyun, known as “Knuckle,” and Chol-Min, known as “The Wrench.” Other encounters include The Captain, a Juggernaut with an elite guard, and an autonomous Wheelson.

DMZ events include Threat Briefings focused on major enemies. One sends squads into Hajin to fight a North Korean main battle tank and collect parts across deployments; another tasks players with finding and defeating The Captain inside X01.

The Resupply Run event asks players to find specific items around points of interest and exchange them for valuable gear such as Self Revives and 3-Plate Carriers.

Warzone Integration Brings Two Maps

Season 1’s Warzone integration adds Hajin and Zodiac as new maps. Verdansk and Rebirth Island will also remain available, with additional modes and gameplay features planned.

Activision has said a separate briefing on November 2 will provide the full Warzone roadmap, so the current announcement does not yet explain every change coming to the free-to-play game.

New Weapons and Attachments

Two weapons headline the Season 1 Battle Pass. The Cronen Osprey is an assault rifle unlocked through the Battle Pass, with a 30-round magazine, 90 reserve rounds, and a listed fire rate of 882 rounds per minute. Its Cronen Helix Mk. II Apex Attachment adds a double-barrel receiver that fires on both trigger pull and release.

The CSG-35 submachine gun is also available through the Battle Pass. It has a 28-round magazine, 112 reserve rounds, and a listed fire rate of 1,200 RPM, making it geared toward close-range fights. Its CSG Crossfire Apex Attachment enables dual-wielding.

More weapons arrive later in the season. The full-auto JAK 12 shotgun and ZLR Talonhawk combat axe are event rewards. The JAK 12 also has a JAK Barrage attachment that launches adhesive explosives.

Additional attachments include Hyeon Auto for the Hyeon Burst assault rifle, Kastov 545 for the Kastov 762, and an M16 Burst attachment for the M4. The season will also add the TT Iron Guard Kit for the .50 GS pistol and ChainSAW Grip for the FiNN LMG.

Battle Pass, BlackCell and Seasonal Events

The Season 1 Battle Pass uses a linear 100-tier progression track and contains more than 100 rewards, including weapon blueprints, operator skins, finishing moves, calling cards, charms, emblems, XP tokens, COD Points, equipment skins, and DMZ Survival Kits.

The premium pass includes a catch-up system that guarantees access to more than 50 rewards and can automatically bring a player forward to the reward matching the current season day, up to day 50.

The Battle Pass costs 1,100 COD Points, while the Battle Pass Bundle costs 2,400 COD Points. Completing all 100 tiers unlocks additional rewards, including the “Vantage” Operator Skin for Blix, the “Blue Viper” Hyeon Burst blueprint, 200 COD Points, and other items. The Tier 100 reward is the “Bellum” Ultra-rarity Mosin-Nagant assault rifle blueprint.

BlackCell adds premium content, including the XERO Operator, additional skins, weapon blueprints, 1,100 COD Points, the “Dog Food” companion finishing move, a custom lobby scene, a mastery camo track, 20 tier skips, and a DMZ Survival Pack.

Modern Warfare 4 Vault Edition owners can access the season’s BlackCell offering; standard-edition players can upgrade to the Vault Edition on the same platform.

Seasonal events will provide more rewards. The Wager Match Event offers attachments, operator skins, blueprints, and camos through multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone challenges. Weapon Camo Events and the Joint Fire event are also planned.

Joint Fire rewards players for teaming up, with squad-size XP boosts and items such as blueprints, charms, Double XP tokens, and a DMZ Survival Kit.

Operators and Additional Rewards

Two featured operators are Blix and XERO. Blix, available through the Battle Pass, is described as a former member of South Korea’s Special Warfare Command who was captured after a covert border mission and later deployed in proxy conflicts. He now operates in the Exclusion Zone.

XERO is a BlackCell launch reward whose background is deliberately mysterious. The announcement describes a classified program involving behavioral conditioning, synthetic identities, combat training, and neurological augmentation, but leaves his past unresolved.

Players can also support veterans through the Call of Duty Endowment Valor Pack, created in collaboration with US Marine Corps veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter. Activision says its net proceeds from the pack, after VAT and sales tax, will go to the Call of Duty Endowment, which helps US and UK veterans find employment.

The announcement also says players can unlock the “Locked Down” universal weapon camo by verifying their Call of Duty account email.
