Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has launched with Kill Block, an adaptive multiplayer battleground capable of producing more than 500 map configurations. The mode assembles each match from three modular sections and supports both 3v3 Gunfight and the new 10v10 Gunfight format.

An official Xbox Wire launch-day overview explains that Kill Block is set inside the West Bridge Advanced Military Training Facility, where the battlefield changes between matches and during a Gunfight session. Activision’s official Kill Block briefing provides the underlying layout and rules.

How Kill Block builds each Modern Warfare 4 map

Every Kill Block map, called a Combo, consists of two outer End Slabs connected to a Central Slab. The rectangular sections can be rearranged into different combinations, changing routes, cover, chokepoints and long sightlines from one match to the next. The complete battlefield is roughly the size of Shoot House from 2019’s Modern Warfare.

The Central Slab is designed to receive players from both neighboring sections, making it a likely point of contact. End Slabs contain each team’s entry area and connect directly into that middle space. Environmental markers—including letters, numbers, room labels, arrows and training signs—help players identify their position as they learn the different pieces.

Some Slabs are entirely new, while others rebuild recognizable locations from earlier games. Activision identifies versions of Crash from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Verdansk’s Storage Town and Shoot House among the available sections. Placing those familiar areas beside randomized neighbors changes the approaches and sightlines surrounding them.

Rain and snow can also appear in equipped Slabs, reducing visibility and altering tactical conditions. Players can climb onto roofs, containers and balconies for better views, although those elevated positions also leave them more exposed.

Kill Block Gunfight rules

Kill Block launches with 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight. Each round is a single-life fight in which every player receives the same randomized primary weapon, secondary weapon and equipment. Custom loadouts are disabled, so teams must work with the shared kit they are given.

Teams exchange sides after the first round. When the second round ends, Kill Block switches to another three-Slab Combo and assigns a fresh random loadout. That cycle repeats every two rounds until one side reaches six wins.

If neither team is eliminated before time expires, an Overtime Flag enters the battlefield. A team can win by capturing it or by holding the health advantage when the overtime period ends.

Activision says the facility is designed to support additional core multiplayer modes in post-launch seasons. At release, however, Kill Block’s featured formats are the two Gunfight variants.

Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer at launch

Beyond Kill Block, Modern Warfare 4 includes 12 core multiplayer maps at launch, with two returning favorites planned shortly afterward. Its broader multiplayer selection also includes Ground War, Hardcore variants, party modes and familiar playlists such as Team Deathmatch, Domination and Hardpoint.

Our earlier Modern Warfare 4 developer interview coverage looks at how Kill Block fits alongside the campaign and DMZ. The game is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, Battle.net, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, with Xbox Play Anywhere support for console and PC purchases.

Does Kill Block’s changing layout make Gunfight more appealing to you, or would you rather learn a fixed map?
