Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ early access is now live, and its Operator system gives every deployment consequences beyond the gear in a player’s backpack. Operators gain individual progression through successful extractions, but a failed run can leave a developed character missing in action and unavailable until the player pays to recover them.
Microsoft’s official Xbox Wire guide explains how recruitment, Dog Tags, Trait Trees, MIA recovery and Operator Prestige work in the extraction mode. DMZ sends solo players and squads into the large Hajin map to complete objectives, gather resources and extract before enemy forces or rival players eliminate them.
How Active Duty Operators work in Modern Warfare 4 DMZ
Players begin with two Active Duty slots, with another becoming available through DMZ Player Levels. Assigning a character locks that Operator to the chosen slot until the player dismisses them and recruits a replacement.
Operators are not purely cosmetic in this version of DMZ. Each one earns DMZ XP, improves the quality of their Dog Tag and gains Trait Points across successful deployments. The system encourages players to maintain a roster with different specialties rather than relying on a single character for every trip into Hajin.
Dog Tags also carry a record of the Operator’s history. Their quality improves as the character progresses and completes extractions, while collected enemy tags can show details including tag type, any bounty on the defeated Operator and the human opponents that player eliminated.
What happens when an Operator becomes MIA
An Operator eliminated during a deployment becomes MIA and cannot be selected again until the player recovers or dismisses them. Recovery is handled through the Active Duty station at the Forward Operating Base and costs DMZ Cash from the in-game Bank.
The price rises with the number of Trait Points invested in that Operator. Recovery preserves the character’s selected Traits but not their lost equipment, so players need to prepare a new Loadout before returning to Hajin. Dismissing the missing Operator and recruiting a replacement is the alternative. A free Loadout is available when a player has no equipment to bring into a deployment.
That risk gives high-level Operators real value: the more time spent developing a specialized build, the more expensive it becomes to restore after a failed extraction. Our earlier Modern Warfare 4 DMZ overview covers the broader Hajin, crafting and deployment systems surrounding that loop.
Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist Trait Trees
Every successful extraction awards one Trait Point. Players can spend those points in three trees, and an Operator can develop across more than one:
- Warfighter supports direct combat and survivability, with benefits such as a Tactical Sprint reset after a kill, rechargeable equipment, reduced explosive damage and proximity warnings for enemy players.
- Scout focuses on looting, detection and field preparation. Its potential Traits can improve enemy and container drops, hide an Operator from UAVs or upgrade UAV performance.
- Survivalist strengthens health recovery, revives and extraction options, including longer consumable effects, smoke when downed and a high-level Trait that can automatically call an exfil under specific conditions.
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ contains 66 Traits in total, although a single Operator can hold no more than 18. Once a player selects a Trait, the choice is locked, and alternatives on the same branch cannot be added to that build. Most Traits remain hidden and are drawn from a varied pool as an Operator progresses, so planning around the options that appear is part of the system.
How Operator Prestige works
An Operator becomes eligible for Prestige after earning 18 Trait Points and meeting additional DMZ Cash and rare-gear requirements. Players should first remove anything they want to keep from the backpack, because its contents are wiped during the process.
Prestiging resets all 18 Trait Points but awards that Operator one randomly selected Permanent Prestige Trait. The permanent benefit stays attached to the character if they change Active Duty slots, use a different skin or are dismissed. Players can then rebuild the Operator and work toward another Prestige, with later levels demanding more valuable equipment and a higher cash payment.
Modern Warfare 4 launches globally on October 23, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Release timing, editions and other launch details are collected in our Modern Warfare 4 Complete FAQ.
