Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 received its official Campaign Trailer at Tokyo Game Show 2026, and it turns the rebooted series’ longtime leader into its central fugitive. John Price is on the run after assassinating General Shepherd, Task Force 141 has been dissolved, and Ghost and Gaz have orders to pursue the captain who once led them.
The official campaign reveal also opens a much larger front. North Korea has begun a full-scale invasion of South Korea, Price is working with former enemy Valeria Garza, and an unidentified weapon is moving toward a figure called the Archer. The trailer was one of the major reveals covered in Game News Plus’ complete Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 roundup, but its story depends on choices made across the three previous Modern Warfare campaigns.
Modern Warfare 4 makes John Price the hunted
Price’s murder of Shepherd at the end of Modern Warfare III was not a sanctioned operation. In Modern Warfare 4, the consequence is immediate: Price has gone off the grid, and Task Force 141 no longer exists as an active unit. Ghost openly questions whether Price’s methods have crossed the line, while he and Gaz are assigned to capture or kill their former commander.
That fracture gives the campaign a more personal conflict than a conventional hunt for a distant villain. Ghost and Gaz know Price’s tactics, his judgment, and the reasoning he used to hold the team together. Now they have to decide how to act against him. Price, meanwhile, is continuing his own pursuit outside official channels and without the protection of the institutions he once served.
Kate Laswell has not completely cut him off. The CIA station chief remains in contact with Price, although the trailer suggests that even she is uneasy about the direction of his operations. Her warning centers on a weapon being transported to an enemy known as the Archer. Activision has not identified the weapon, explained what it can do, or revealed the Archer’s objective. Those are deliberate gaps in the current setup rather than details the publisher has confirmed.
With his former team hunting him and his official support disappearing, Price turns to Valeria Garza, also known as El Sin Nombre. The head of the Las Almas Cartel was a key adversary in Modern Warfare II, making the alliance an uncomfortable one rather than a clean redemption. The official material says the two are putting aside their rivalry to confront a greater threat, but it does not disclose what either side is prepared to give up in the arrangement.
How the rebooted Modern Warfare story reached this point
Call of Duty has also published an official Modern Warfare story recap that connects Price’s fugitive status to the rebooted continuity that began in 2019. The central thread is not simply that Price became more ruthless. Each campaign weakened his trust in the command structure around Task Force 141 until he chose to act as judge and executioner.
Modern Warfare (2019): Verdansk, Urzikstan, and Task Force 141
The chain of events began at a military depot in Verdansk. U.S. Marines and CIA operative Alex Keller attempted to recover weaponized chlorine gas tied to rogue Russian General Roman Barkov, only to be ambushed. The gas was stolen, and the attack left Alex as one of the mission’s few survivors.
A day later, Al-Qatala attacked Piccadilly Circus in London. Captain Price and Kyle “Gaz” Garrick responded, and the investigation eventually pointed toward the terrorist group’s leader, the Wolf. Laswell then sent Alex to Urzikstan, where Commander Farah Karim and the Urzikstan Liberation Force were fighting both Al-Qatala and Barkov’s illegal Russian occupation.
Alex and Farah formed a practical alliance: he would support the fight against Barkov, and the ULF would help recover the gas. The situation became more complicated when Farah’s brother, Hadir Karim, was exposed as the person who had taken the chemicals to use against the occupying Russian forces. Laswell handed Hadir to Russia to contain the international fallout.
Price’s coalition eventually attacked Barkov’s chemical production facility in Georgia. Alex appeared to sacrifice himself to destroy it, while Farah killed Barkov. After the operation, Price requested the files of Gaz, Johnny “Soap” MacTavish, and Simon “Ghost” Riley. With Laswell’s support, they became the core of Task Force 141, a unit designed to respond to threats without being trapped by ordinary military bureaucracy.
Modern Warfare II: Shepherd’s missiles and the betrayal in Las Almas
The authority that allowed Task Force 141 to move quickly also placed it beneath General Shepherd. Working with Phillip Graves and the private military company Shadow Company, Shepherd secretly moved American ballistic missiles to allies in the Middle East. Konni ultranationalists intercepted the shipment, putting U.S. weapons into a network connected to Vladimir Makarov.
Shepherd tried to hide the failed operation rather than accept responsibility. The missiles passed through Iranian Major Hassan Zyani, who used the Las Almas Cartel to move them toward the United States. That operation brought Task Force 141 into Mexico alongside Alejandro Vargas and his Los Vaqueros unit. It also placed Valeria Garza at the center of the story as the cartel leader El Sin Nombre.
Ghost and Soap learned that the missing missiles were American-made, but Shepherd told them to ignore their origin. Graves then turned Shadow Company against Task Force 141 and Los Vaqueros. Alejandro was imprisoned, Soap was wounded, and Ghost escaped. The betrayal established that Shepherd would sacrifice his own people to protect his secret, a decision that later shaped Price’s final response to him.
Modern Warfare III: Makarov kills Soap, and Price crosses the line
Vladimir Makarov escalated his campaign through false-flag attacks intended to destabilize the West. His plan to detonate a dirty bomb in the Channel Tunnel brought Price and Soap into direct confrontation with him beneath London. As Soap tried to defuse the device, Makarov ambushed the pair. Soap intervened to save Price and was shot dead.
For Price, Soap’s death became the breaking point. He held Shepherd responsible not for pulling the trigger, but for creating the conditions that allowed Makarov and Konni to grow while Shadow Company hunted the people trying to expose the truth. Price later entered Shepherd’s office and killed him.
That assassination explains the opening state of Modern Warfare 4. Price is not merely conducting another deniable mission. He has killed a general, abandoned the system, and continued a personal hunt that his former teammates can no longer separate from his grief and anger. Ghost’s challenge to Price is therefore rooted in the same history that once united Task Force 141.
A war in Korea expands the Modern Warfare 4 campaign
The pursuit of Price unfolds alongside a full-scale invasion of South Korea. The campaign begins with the attack on Hajin City, where Private Park Hyun Jun and his squad are pulled into their country’s defense. U.S. and Republic of Korea Marines fight together on the ground and take part in an amphibious assault as occupied territory becomes the campaign’s second major front.
Activision’s current overview describes several other operations: trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters fighting in New York, high-speed action in Paris, SAS night missions in Mumbai, and a citywide assault to retake occupied territory. Those locations establish the campaign’s reach, but they do not yet explain how each mission connects to Price, the invasion, the Archer, or the unknown weapon.
That distinction matters because the official descriptions are a preview of scenarios, not a full plot outline. The confirmed structure links three pressures: Ghost and Gaz’s hunt for Price, Park’s fight during the Korean invasion, and the race to stop a weapon from reaching the Archer. How those threads converge remains unanswered.
Valeria may be the connective tissue. Her cartel’s role in moving weapons during Modern Warfare II gives her access to routes and contacts outside formal military networks, which helps explain why Price would need her. The sources stop short of confirming, however, whether she knows the weapon’s location, has information about the Archer, or has motives beyond surviving the new threat.
Campaign Early Access and release platforms
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026. Campaign Early Access begins Friday, October 16 for players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase either the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition. The official list covers Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. Activision notes that actual play time and platform availability can be affected by outages, time-zone differences, or schedule changes.
The campaign arrives after players had an earlier chance to test the competitive side of the game; Game News Plus previously covered the Modern Warfare 4 open beta schedule and its global closing time. The new trailer now shifts attention back to the story and to a version of John Price who is no longer protected by the team he created.
What do you make of Price’s transformation from Task Force 141 leader into the man Ghost and Gaz have been ordered to hunt?
