Fable Launch FAQ: Release Time, Early Access, Game Pass, Editions, Preload, and PC Specs

Fable launches February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, with day-one access through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Premium and Collector’s Edition buyers can begin up to five days early on February 18. Playground Games’ open-world action RPG is a single-player reboot rather than a continuation of the Lionhead trilogy, and it is a PS5 launch title as well as an Xbox and PC release.

When does Fable release?

Playground Games’ official Fable FAQ confirms a February 23, 2027 launch. Premium Edition and Collector’s Edition owners receive up to five days of early access beginning February 18.

An exact universal unlock hour has not been announced. Storefront countdowns can vary by platform and region, so buyers should use the timer attached to their own account rather than assume midnight local time. “Up to five days” also allows for the possibility that a purchase, installation, or regional release occurs after the early-access window opens.

What platforms is Fable coming to?

Fable launches simultaneously on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Windows PC through the Xbox app. It is also available through Xbox Cloud Gaming for eligible Game Pass Ultimate members. Despite the Xbox publishing label, PS5 is an official launch platform, not a later port.

Xbox console and Xbox PC Store purchases support Xbox Play Anywhere, which carries the owned game, eligible downloadable content, achievements, and saves between Xbox Series X|S and Windows through the same Microsoft account. Play Anywhere does not include Steam or PS5 purchases.

No Xbox One or PlayStation 4 version has been announced. The current physical Standard Edition is intended for Xbox Series X|S or PS5, depending on the selected retail version.

Is Fable on Game Pass?

Yes. Fable is a day-one Game Pass release. The official FAQ names Game Pass Ultimate, while Microsoft also offers the PC version through PC Game Pass. Console players should not assume every lower subscription tier includes the release; Microsoft can change plan names and catalogs, so the product page for the active membership is the final check.

Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members can buy the Premium Upgrade for $39.99. That unlocks the Premium Edition extras and early-access entitlement without requiring a separate Standard Edition purchase, but continued access to the base game still depends on an active qualifying subscription unless the player later buys it.

Fable editions, US prices, and bonuses

The Premium content pack includes the Splendid Armor, Bastard Armor, and a selection of in-game gifts. Fable: Order of the Hero is a story expansion planned for after launch, with a new area of Albion and a mysterious cult. Playground Games has not announced its standalone price or release date.

There is no physical Premium Edition. Players who want a disc can buy the physical Standard Edition, then add the digital Premium Upgrade. The Xbox upgrade is available before launch; the official FAQ says PS5 and Steam Standard owners can upgrade after the February 23 release.

Every preorder includes a Chicken Suit, Wild Flower Bouquet, Toy Chicken, and Scones & Jam Picnic Hamper. These are cosmetic or gift items used within Fable’s reputation and relationship systems rather than additional story chapters.

What kind of game is Fable?

Fable is a single-player open-world action RPG and a new beginning for the series. It is not a direct continuation of the original trilogy. Players create a Hero, combine melee weapons, ranged attacks, and magic, and build a reputation through moral choices that affect relationships and parts of the world.

The setting remains Albion, rebuilt as a fully open world with reimagined locations. Beyond combat, players can take jobs, purchase homes, become a landlord, run businesses, form romances, and have a family. Playground says more than 1,000 handcrafted non-player characters populate the world.

The studio estimates 15–20 hours for the main story and another 15–20 hours of side content, before open-ended systems such as property, relationships, and businesses. We previously covered Playground Games’ explanation of Fable’s story length.

Does Fable have co-op or multiplayer?

No. Playground Games explicitly describes Fable as a single-player open-world action RPG. There is no online co-op, couch co-op, competitive multiplayer, crossplay, or multiplayer progression to account for at launch.

Fable PC requirements

On compatible hardware, the PC release supports uncapped frame rates, 4K, HDR10, Nvidia DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 3 and 4, and Intel XeSS 2.1. These features require the appropriate GPU and display. Playground Games also says console players will have 30 fps and 60 fps options, with platform-specific detail still to come.

Preload and download size

Fable can be pre-installed through Game Pass, but Microsoft has not announced the final client size or a complete preload timetable for purchased versions. The 135 GB PC storage requirement is available-space guidance, not a promise that the download itself will be exactly 135 GB.

Premium and Collector’s Edition buyers should finish any available preload before February 18 if they want to use the full early-access window. Physical Collector’s Editions are expected to ship close enough to launch for early access, but delivery timing can still depend on the carrier.

Who is developing and publishing Fable?

Playground Games, the studio behind Forza Horizon, is developing Fable. Xbox Game Studios is the publisher. The Fable team is separate from the studio’s Forza Horizon team.

Can Standard Edition owners upgrade?

Yes. Xbox Standard owners can buy the Premium Upgrade now. PS5 and Steam upgrades are planned after launch. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members can also use the upgrade with their subscription copy.

Does the physical Standard Edition include early access?

Not by itself. Early access is a Premium or Collector’s Edition benefit. A physical Standard owner needs the supported Premium Upgrade for the same platform.

Is the Collector’s Edition coming back in stock?

Playground Games says it is sold out and currently has no restock plans.
