Cyberpunk 2 associate game director Paweł Sasko says roughly half of the sequel’s quest team consists of former modders, including developers who previously made mods for CD Projekt Red games.
Sasko made the comments during a recent REDstreams presentation about Cyberpunk 2077’s Update 2.5 and its cross-platform mod support. Video Games Chronicle reported that the discussion moved from keeping the existing game fresh to the role modding can play in building a professional career.

Sasko described modding as a practical way for players to learn how games are assembled and how content can be built. In his view, that experience can become a “gateway into game development” and give aspiring developers tangible work to show a studio.
He said CD Projekt Red has hired many modders, including people whose earlier projects involved The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. Those developers now work inside the company rather than remaining outside contributors.
The scope of Sasko’s estimate is important: he was talking about the team responsible for quests, not half of Cyberpunk 2’s entire development staff. His phrasing also presented the figure as an estimate rather than a formal staffing breakdown.
The REDstreams presentation was primarily tied to Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5, which added integrated access to community mods. Sasko connected that feature to a broader talent pipeline, where creators can move from modifying CD Projekt Red games to designing new quests professionally.
Could modding be the strongest portfolio route into professional quest design?
