The Legend of Zelda director Hidemaro Fujibayashi wants future entries to give developers room to experiment instead of simply reusing ideas from Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, or Ocarina of Time.
Speaking in a Polygon interview discussed by GamesRadar+, Fujibayashi described Zelda as a foundation where developers can bring forward ideas they believe will be fun and turn them into playable systems.
He said one of the questions he often asks younger team members is whether an idea will actually be enjoyable. When a proposal resembles something the series has already done, he uses that comparison to push the discussion further rather than treating the existing games as a fixed pool that must be reused.
Fujibayashi has directed several major entries in the franchise, including Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom. He also worked on Capcom-developed Zelda titles before joining Nintendo, giving him experience across several distinct versions of the series’ structure.
His comments do not reveal the setting, format, or mechanics of Nintendo’s next original Zelda game. Instead, they describe a development philosophy that values new ideas and judges them by how much fun they add, even when the series has successful formulas available to revisit.
The remarks arrive as Nintendo revisits one of the franchise’s defining games through its Ocarina of Time remake for Nintendo Switch 2, which modernizes the original while preserving its core adventure.
What kind of new idea would you like the next original Zelda game to explore?
