State of Decay 3 is being built with a strong single-player focus while retaining multiplayer, according to new comments from Undead Labs studio head Philip Holt about the game’s design and the studio’s future.

Holt discussed the project in an interview with the SabiansLastWatch YouTube channel, with the main points reported by Insider Gaming. The reported details include a full pause option in single-player and combat rebuilt around more tactical encounters.

Other interview highlights describe larger settlements, support for multiple bases, and communities with more than 12 survivors. Character customization is expected to cover hair, outfits, and backpacks rather than a full face or body editor. Existing Freak enemies are also being redesigned, while new types are planned for after launch.

Weather is intended to affect more than visuals, with reported effects on driving, zombie perception, crops, and water supplies. Human enclave relationships are also expected to respond to player actions. These points come from the interview rather than a separate feature announcement, so their final implementation may continue to evolve during development.

Undead Labs officially became an independent, employee-owned studio in September after separating from Xbox. The developer says State of Decay 3 remains in active development for a 2027 release on Xbox, Game Pass, PC, and PlayStation. Holt indicated that a new publishing partner would be announced, but no publisher has been named publicly.

The studio previously confirmed plans to move from alpha into a closed beta before the end of 2026, as covered in our State of Decay 3 beta report.
