Sea of Thieves Season 21 is arriving with a free play weekend, new social tools and a slate of Talk Like a Pirate Day rewards. The free access period begins September 17 at 15:00 UTC and runs through September 21 at 17:00 UTC across every supported platform, with no Xbox Game Pass subscription required for online play.

Microsoft detailed the promotion in an Xbox Wire announcement. The free weekend gives newcomers four days to join Rare’s shared-world pirate game while the new season and its limited-time celebrations get underway.

Parley Pennant rewards crews for talking first

Season 21 adds the Parley Pennant, a permanent flag that tells nearby crews its wearer is open to a conversation. Players can use the signal to propose an Alliance, team up for a challenge or simply meet another crew without immediately opening fire.

Rare’s official September schedule says crews that approach three other ships with the pennant raised during the Talk Like a Pirate Day event can unlock the Parley Proficiency Sails. That event runs from September 17 through September 22.

Microsoft is also running the Golden Legends Sweepstakes from September 17 through October 31 in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the Netherlands. Eligible entrants can use Microsoft Rewards points or download Bing wallpapers for chances to win a one-of-a-kind Golden Legends Xbox Series X, a matching controller and one year of Xbox Game Pass Premium. Additional controllers and subscriptions are listed as second-place prizes, subject to the promotion’s terms.

More rewards and Season 21 activities

Microsoft Rewards members in participating regions can spend points on Ancient Coin bundles that include the Loquacious Figurehead for a limited time. Xbox Game Pass subscribers can also claim the Vociferous Speaking Trumpet as an in-game benefit between September 17 and October 31.

On Xbox consoles, a new Lone Survivor dynamic background is available from the Personalization menu. The broader Season 21 calendar includes recurring Fight Nights and Bilge Rats Weekenders, more additions to Custom Seas, celebrations marking 25 years of Xbox and a refreshed seasonal reward track ending with the Flame’s Light Lantern.

Which Season 21 addition are you most interested in trying during the free play weekend?
