PS5 Gets QSSR AI Upscaling, Starting With Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei

Sony is bringing AI-guided upscaling to the standard PS5 through Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first supported games, with patches released on October 1, 2026, that add QSSR as an optional graphics setting.

The new technology is a lower-cost offshoot of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, the AI upscaler previously limited to PS5 Pro. Sony says PSSR remains its highest-quality option on the upgraded console, while QSSR is designed to improve image detail and stability within the performance limits of the original PS5.

According to Sony’s official PlayStation Blog announcement, QSSR grew out of Project Amethyst, its graphics partnership with AMD. The library combines a streamlined neural-network architecture with an implementation tuned specifically for PS5 hardware.

Insomniac Games says QSSR can add pixel-level clarity and stability to Marvel’s Wolverine’s environments, including the busy streets of Madripoor and Shinjuku. Sony published a comparison video showing the feature in action:

Sucker Punch Productions points to fine character and environmental details in Ghost of Yōtei, along with improved temporal stability as the image changes from frame to frame. Its official comparison video offers a second look at the QSSR implementation:

Those descriptions come from the developers, and the patches will provide the first opportunity for PS5 owners to compare QSSR with each game’s existing graphics options. Sony has not said that QSSR will replace those modes.

QSSR will also be made broadly available to PlayStation developers, although Sony has not announced additional supported games or a wider rollout schedule. Its arrival gives studios another way to target higher image quality on the standard PS5 without requiring the more computationally demanding PSSR used by PS5 Pro.
