Naughty Dog has confirmed that two new The Last of Us projects are in very early development. Studio head Neil Druckmann says both projects will expand the series’ canon beyond The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II.

Druckmann shared the news in an official Naughty Dog update published on September 28, 2026. He said the studio has discussed the possibility of telling more stories in this world and now has two projects underway, though they remain too early for Naughty Dog to reveal further details.

The announcement confirms that the franchise’s canon will continue, but it does not identify what either project actually is. Naughty Dog has not disclosed their formats, scope, platforms, release windows, or how the two projects may differ from one another.

That means neither project has been confirmed as The Last of Us Part III, downloadable content, a spin-off, a multiplayer game, a remake or remaster, or a television production. Those possibilities remain speculation unless Naughty Dog announces otherwise.

Druckmann added that the studio would not return to The Last of Us without something meaningful to say and believes these new stories are worth telling. For now, the confirmed takeaway is limited but significant: two separate projects are in their earliest stages, and both are intended to move the canon beyond the first two games.

What do you think these two projects could be?
