Beyond Good & Evil 2 reportedly remains in pre-production 18 years after development began, with full production yet to start under Ubisoft’s internal terminology.
Origami journalist Gauthier Andres reports, based on conversations with multiple people close to development, that at least 250 people are involved at Ubisoft Montpellier alone. Insider Gaming says it independently verified much of Origami’s reporting.
According to Origami, the team is working toward a development “gate” intended to move the project into production and toward alpha. In Ubisoft’s reported production framework, that would mean the game’s core direction has been approved and the team can move into building out playable content at full scale.
The report also describes how the project’s direction has changed repeatedly. Between roughly 2019 and 2022, Beyond Good & Evil 2 was reportedly designed around extensive multiplayer systems, persistent connectivity, and numerous planets. The current direction is said to be a “solo first” adventure with stronger narrative content, no mandatory online connection, and co-op still planned.
Origami reports that uncertainty now surrounds the project’s next gate as Ubisoft continues a wider restructuring. People within the team reportedly do not know what will happen after that milestone, although sources expressed differing views about the game’s future.
None of these new development details has been officially confirmed by Ubisoft. The report does not say that Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been cancelled or that cancellation is imminent, and no current platform list or release window was provided.
We reported on the sequel’s pre-production status in 2016, when the project was being teased again. A decade later, the latest reporting suggests it still has not crossed into full production.
