Recent data from Circana reveals that disc editions of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) dominate sales in the United States, comprising 82% of total lifetime sales. In contrast, the digital-only models account for just 18%.
Despite Sony’s efforts to encourage players to opt for the digital version—offering it at a lower price and introducing the new PS5 Pro exclusively in digital format—consumers appear to prefer the flexibility of physical media. Users must purchase a separate disc drive to access disc games on the digital-only PS5, which adds to the overall cost.
Interestingly, while there is a significant push towards digital sales, September 2024 saw digital PS5 sales representing 40% of new sales for that month, indicating a growing acceptance of digital formats among gamers.
On the Xbox front, the Xbox Series X has recently overtaken the Series S in total unit sales, achieving a narrow lead of 51% as of September 2024. This shift highlights the competitive landscape as companies navigate consumer preferences in the evolving gaming market.
