Quake Champions will be free to play with purchasable heroes

Hello Grunt, my old friend.

The industry is changing, so do the games –even the oldschool ones. The latest installment of the legendary Quake series is no different, for it comes with two options to play: Free-to-play and “for-pay”, as Tim Willits states in an interview with Polygon.

What is a “for-pay” option? Well, I haven’t heard about it either, until now. But in fact, it is a payment system you all are familiar with:

for-pay (not comparable)

  1. By subscription; that must be purchased to use.
The website’s for-pay access provides premium options.
The freeware version will be supplanted by an overhauled for-pay release.

Yeah, “premium options”. That means, in Quake Champions’ terms, you have to buy the game at full price (~$60) to have access to all the heroes it offers. If you don’t want to pay any price to have a satisfatory rocket-jump action, you’ll have to stick with Grunt, the only hero available to the free-to-players.

Will we be able to purchase other heroes, like in League of Legends or other for-pay competitive games? Apperently, the player will be able to “rent” (Tim Willits doesn’t want to use this term, but let’s all be sincere here) other playable characters. The player won’t supposed to pay these characters in real cash, for there will be an option to buy rent them via “favors”. These “favors” can be earned by making the announcer yell “IMPRESSIVE” a lot. Meaning, “if you play good, you can RENT some of our heroes.” Whether the balance between payers and non-payers be there or not, we’ll see.

(Is there an announcer in Quake Champions? We don’t know. But it would be good.)

It is boring to discuss the “business models” of games, we know. It is also boring to know that every day we need to spend more and more money for our gaming hobby. We used to call model making or snowboarding as expensive hobbies. Well, now, gaming became (especially PC gaming if you don’t pirate) probably one of the most expensive hobbies –especially in the countries with challenging economies, in where you should pay 5X price for a gaming hub because of some numbers & rates determined by some people in some white collars.

Ahem. I delivered the message, off I go then.

Stay tuned! ^^
