Xbox Won’t Say Whether Project Helix Has a Disc Drive

Xbox has not confirmed whether its next-generation Project Helix hardware will include a disc drive. CEO Asha Sharma declined to answer the question directly during a BBC News interview, leaving the future of physical-media support on the new Xbox system unresolved.

As reported by Eurogamer, Sharma emphasized that Xbox wants players’ libraries to move with them across devices, whether those libraries began with physical or digital purchases. Asked again if Project Helix would be disc-less, she said Xbox was not sharing more about the hardware yet.

Physical support remains unconfirmed

Sharma said Xbox recognizes that players value both physical and digital media and wants to preserve choice. That position is not the same as a hardware commitment: she neither confirmed a disc drive nor announced that Project Helix would be digital-only.

The comments arrived alongside Xbox’s new disc-to-digital initiative. According to the official Xbox announcement, Insiders can claim a digital entitlement for supported games by inserting a disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launching it. Xbox says most disc-based games for those systems are supported, with thousands of titles planned, while the original disc continues to work.

That program can extend access to supported digital features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It does not answer whether future Helix devices will read discs themselves, since claiming an entitlement currently requires compatible existing Xbox hardware.

What Microsoft has confirmed about Project Helix

Microsoft announced Project Helix in March as its next-generation first-party Xbox console. The official Project Helix overview says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games and will use a custom AMD system-on-chip developed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR technology.

Xbox plans to send alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Sharma has also described Helix as a family of devices, but Microsoft has not yet detailed individual models, pricing, release timing, or optical-drive configurations.

For now, any claim that Project Helix definitely has—or definitely lacks—a disc drive goes beyond what Xbox has announced. The only confirmed answer is that the company is not ready to disclose that part of its next-generation hardware plans.
