Microsoft chief strategy officer Matthew Ball says Grand Theft Auto VI preorder activity is breaking records on Xbox, responding to a report that early orders were heavily tilted toward PlayStation 5.
In a September 24 post on X, Ball said Microsoft was “very happy” with GTA VI preorders and expects more Xbox records through the fall. He added that the company’s internal analysis shows Xbox’s share of preorders matching its share of the console market. Microsoft did not disclose unit totals or specify which records had been surpassed.
His statement followed reporting by The Verge’s Tom Warren, which cited Xbox sources saying GTA VI preorders were heavily skewed toward PS5. Ball’s response does not dispute that PS5 may hold the larger absolute share; it says Xbox’s performance is in line with the size of its console market. Both statements could therefore be true.
According to Take-Two Interactive’s official preorder announcement, Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Standard Edition is priced at $79.99.
Does Xbox’s market-share comparison change how you read the reported PS5 preorder lead?
