Xbox has formed Xbox Labs, a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists tasked with turning emerging ideas into experiences that players and developers can try. The group will be led by an executive identified as Scott in the company’s announcement.

The initiative was revealed in a message sent to Xbox employees worldwide and published on Xbox Wire. The memo says Xbox Labs will build in the open, study how people use its experiments and judge success by whether more people are playing and creating.

Xbox pointed to recent projects that have rebuilt games for hardware they were not originally designed to support, translated Windows PC builds for Apple Silicon and moved games into browsers through WebAssembly and WebGPU. It also highlighted experiments that remix one game’s code into another as examples of how the boundaries between playing and creating are changing.

The company says tools developed through Xbox Labs will be shared with developers across the industry as the work progresses. It also stressed that the new group does not replace its existing priorities: Xbox remains committed to its “4Cs,” making games, producing hardware and acting as a responsible steward of its intellectual property and communities.

Which kind of experimental gaming technology would you most like to see Xbox Labs explore first?
