Wing Commander III 30th Anniversary Edition Revealed With Restored FMV

Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger is getting a 30th Anniversary Edition built around restored full-motion video from the original source tapes. EA producer Jim Vessella revealed the project during a presentation at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo.

Steve Lin of the Video Game History Foundation shared a photo from the presentation, showing the anniversary edition’s title and planned features. The project lists original master FMV footage alongside upscaled versions, Kilrathi Saga integration, the Community Enhancement Patch, gameplay at up to 60 frames per second and controller support.

A follow-up from Lin identifies Steam, GOG and the EA app as the planned PC storefronts. The presentation did not provide a release date or price, and the exact meaning of “Kilrathi Saga integration” has not yet been explained. It would therefore be premature to assume that the package includes the first two games or every expansion associated with the compilation.

The recovered video is central to the new edition. Lin said the re-release will use footage from tapes found during Vessella’s work digitizing EA’s video archive. PC Gamer reports that Vessella discovered roughly 600 source tapes during that archival effort. That number concerns the broader archive discovery and should not be read as a confirmed count of tapes used exclusively for Wing Commander III.

Originally released in 1994, Wing Commander III combined space combat with an extensive live-action cast led by Mark Hamill as Christopher Blair. Returning to the original recordings gives the anniversary project a path to improve its cinematic material without relying only on compressed video from the shipped game.

EA has not yet published a full product page or detailed technical specification for the edition. For now, the event presentation confirms the project and its headline features, while timing, pricing and the final scope remain open.

Which matters more to you for this re-release: the restored FMV footage or the modern controller and 60 fps support?
