Valve Developer Mentions HLX, Rumored Half-Life 3 Codename

A Valve developer referred to a project called “HLX” during a recent GameSoundCon panel, giving the long-rumored codename a rare acknowledgment from inside the company. However, Valve has not confirmed that HLX is Half-Life 3 or formally announced a new Half-Life game.

According to IGN’s report, Valve music designer Mike Morasky mentioned HLX while discussing high dynamic range audio systems. Morasky said Deadlock uses one type of HDR audio and HLX uses its own approach, then stopped speaking shortly afterward.

The reference is notable because dataminers have previously found mentions of HLX in Valve-related files and connected the codename to a possible new Half-Life project. That connection remains an interpretation rather than an official confirmation from Valve.

IGN described the panel comment as the first known instance of a Valve employee publicly naming HLX. The mention indicates that HLX is a real Valve project, but the company has not disclosed its full title, scope, release timing, or whether it is the game fans have been calling Half-Life 3.

What do you think Valve’s public mention of HLX means for the long-running Half-Life rumors?
