A new computational analysis suggests the blurry plaque in Super Mario 64 may read “Eternal Star” and “We hope so,” offering a fresh answer to the decades-old “L is real 2401” mystery.
Reddit user Mochi64 documented the project in a detailed r/SM64 post. The analysis worked from the original 32-by-32-pixel plaque texture, where individual letters are only around three to five pixels high, and compared millions of possible text combinations against the image.
“Eternal Star” produced the best match for the upper line. For the center phrase, “hope” ranked first among 12,556 candidate words, supporting the reading “We hope so.” The proposed text would also fit the star statue’s placement in Peach’s Castle better than the long-running fan interpretation.
The work was highlighted by Video Games Chronicle, but it is not an official confirmation from Nintendo. Extremely low-resolution source art leaves room for interpretation, and the original artist or internal design documentation would still provide the most definitive answer.
The plaque became one of gaming’s best-known visual mysteries because its compressed text appeared to some players to say “L is real 2401,” fueling years of Luigi rumors. The new reconstruction does not erase that history, but it provides a testable explanation grounded in the texture’s actual pixel pattern.
Does “Eternal Star — We hope so” look convincing to you, or do you still see “L is real 2401”?
