Sony Reportedly Has an ‘Exclusive of Sorts’ on RDNA 5 for Handhelds

Sony may have an “exclusive of sorts” on RDNA 5 for handheld devices, according to Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter. He said behind-the-scenes discussions suggest the reported advantage is connected to Sony’s upcoming mobile device, although the hardware itself remains unannounced.

The claim surfaced during a recent supporter-only Digital Foundry discussion. Leadbetter’s wording was deliberately qualified: this was not presented as confirmation of a formal exclusivity contract between Sony and AMD.

The apparent advantage concerns a dedicated semi-custom RDNA 5 chip for Sony’s rumored PlayStation handheld. If the report is accurate, Sony’s device could be the only RDNA 5 handheld using a dedicated custom chip, while future Xbox, Steam Deck and other PC handhelds may rely on different or more standard AMD solutions.

That possibility should not be read as confirmation that Microsoft, Valve or other manufacturers are barred from using RDNA 5. Sony and AMD have not publicly announced an RDNA 5 exclusivity arrangement, and neither company has confirmed the chip configuration described in the report.

Would a dedicated RDNA 5 chip make Sony’s rumored PlayStation handheld more appealing to you?
