Sony Prioritizes Recurring Revenue Over Aggressive PS5 Sales

Sony Group CEO Hiroki Totoki says the company is concentrating on recurring revenue from its existing PlayStation audience rather than aggressively pushing additional PS5 hardware sales at this stage of the console’s life.

GamesRadar+, citing Totoki’s interview with The Wall Street Journal, reports that the executive described PlayStation as being in the latter half of its current console cycle. That position allows Sony to put more emphasis on revenue from people already using the platform.

Sony’s official results for the first quarter of its 2026 fiscal year show that PlayStation reached 125 million monthly active accounts in June, up 2% year over year and a record for the month of June.

The 125 million figure covers the wider PlayStation ecosystem, not PlayStation Plus subscribers alone. Sony defines monthly active users as unique accounts that played games or used PlayStation services online during the final month of the quarter.

Totoki’s remarks place that established audience at the center of Sony’s current PlayStation strategy, with recurring revenue taking priority over an aggressive drive for new PS5 hardware sales.
