Sony Pictures has acquired the feature-film rights to Mouthwashing, with Karyn Kusama attached to direct the adaptation of Wrong Organ’s psychological horror game.
The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline first reported the deal, which Wrong Organ and publisher CRITICAL REFLEX subsequently confirmed. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay are writing the screenplay.
The Mouthwashing movie’s creative team
Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, and Vince Cheng will produce through Crooked Highway. Screen Gems, Sony’s genre-focused label, is also involved in the project.
Kusama’s directing credits include Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation, and Destroyer. Manfredi and Hay previously collaborated with her on The Invitation and Destroyer.
The game follows the crew of the stranded space freighter Tulpar as dwindling supplies, isolation, and the aftermath of a disaster push its five crew members toward a desperate situation. Sony has not announced casting, a production schedule, or a release date for the film.
The confirmed project details establish the team behind the adaptation, but not how closely the movie will follow the game’s nonlinear story.
Which part of Mouthwashing’s story do you think will be hardest to translate to film?
