Sony Has Not Reversed Its 2028 PlayStation Disc Plan Despite Rumor

Sony has not announced any reversal or delay to its plan to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028. A new rumor claims the company may be reconsidering that deadline, but it currently rests on anonymous Gamescom chatter rather than a Sony statement or supporting document.

The claim was discussed on a Eurogamer Spain podcast and subsequently reported by MP1st. It suggests publishers are pushing back against Sony’s policy and that the company fears Microsoft could attract physical-media buyers with its next Xbox hardware. Push Square also covered the rumor skeptically.

Sony’s public position remains the one set out in its July 1 PlayStation Blog announcement: physical disc production for new PlayStation releases will end starting in January 2028. Games released on disc before that date are not affected by the cutoff.

The company reinforced that direction in its first-quarter investor Q&A. Sony said digital distribution already represents a substantial share of content sales and that it does not expect the change to hurt business performance, while adding that it will consider player preferences carefully.

Microsoft has meanwhile announced a real, but narrower, physical-media initiative. Its Xbox disc-to-digital program lets players insert supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X discs and claim digital entitlements for compatible games. Microsoft has not confirmed that its next console will follow the “100% physical” strategy described in the rumor.

Unless Sony publishes a revised timeline, the January 2028 cutoff remains the only confirmed plan. The debate also extends beyond discs to what customers receive from digital purchases; GNP recently examined Sony’s defense of PlayStation’s digital-game licensing disclosures in a California lawsuit.
