Sony Announces Japan-Only Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition for ¥55,000

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition for Japan, priced at ¥55,000 including tax. The console launches on November 19, 2026, with preorders opening October 20 through PlayStation retailers and e-commerce sites in Japan.

The official Japanese PlayStation Blog announcement describes the new model as limited to use in Japan. Separately, Sony says the console language must be set to Japanese and the PlayStation account’s country/region must be Japan. In other words, its Japan-only availability and its language and account requirements are distinct restrictions.

The Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition includes an 825GB custom SSD and does not have a built-in disc drive. It can run downloadable PS5 games and supported PS4 games obtained from the Japanese PlayStation Store. Sony says some PS4 games may not be compatible. A PlayStation account and internet connection are required for downloaded games, and system software updates may also be needed.

Inside the box are the console, one Midnight Black DualSense wireless controller, two horizontal feet, an HDMI cable, a power cord, a USB cable, printed materials, and Astro’s Playroom preinstalled. The vertical stand is sold separately.

Sony will also release a matching Midnight Black Disc Drive on November 19 for ¥11,980 including tax. The add-on includes the drive, a matching console cover, a long horizontal foot, and an instruction manual. It lets the Digital Edition play compatible physical games after installation, although an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console.

The announcement also notes that PlayStation games newly released from January 2028 onward will be sold as downloads through the PlayStation Store and retailers, while disc games released before January 2028 will remain usable. Sony does not announce plans for this Midnight Black console outside Japan.

The new model is also eligible for Sony’s Japanese warranty promotion: qualifying consoles purchased through March 31, 2027 can receive a second year of warranty coverage after the buyer completes the required campaign application.

What do you think of the Midnight Black design and the Japan-specific usage requirements?
