Reddit has begun testing advertisements directly within its search result pages, initially limiting the experiment to a select group of eligible advertisers.
In its November 3 announcement, Reddit said the placements use its existing ad-targeting systems and can appear based on several factors, including how closely an ad relates to a user’s search query.
Search context may help determine which ads appear
Reddit illustrated the approach with product-focused examples. A search about setting up an espresso station could produce ads for coffee machines, beans, or mugs. A home-office search could instead show ads for monitors, desks, or chairs.
Contextual relevance is one factor rather than the only rule governing placement. Reddit has not detailed every targeting signal involved or specified how often users included in the test will encounter an ad.
The initial test has a limited advertiser pool
Reddit said the first phase is available only to a select group of eligible advertisers. The company plans to study how users respond and use those findings to adjust the experience for both users and advertisers.
The announcement did not provide a timeline for a broader rollout, nor did it say when additional advertisers might gain access. For now, search ads remain a test rather than a platform-wide launch.
Would relevant ads make Reddit search more useful or more distracting for you?
