PlayStation 5 remains 1% ahead of PlayStation 4 in US lifetime unit sales at the same point in each console’s life, while Xbox Series X|S trails both Xbox 360 and Xbox One, according to Circana data through month 71.

Mat Piscatella of Circana said PS5 is also 40% ahead of PlayStation 3 through the same number of months. Xbox Series X|S, by comparison, is 35% behind Xbox 360 and 28% behind Xbox One.

US lifetime sales through month 71

  • PS5: 40% ahead of PS3 and 1% ahead of PS4
  • Xbox Series X|S: 35% behind Xbox 360 and 28% behind Xbox One

These are cumulative comparisons through the first 71 months on sale. They should not be mixed with Circana’s separate calendar-year-seven figures.

January–September sales in calendar year seven

For January through September 2026, PS5 unit sales were 4% below PS3’s January–September 2012 result and 3% below PS4’s equivalent 2019 period.

Xbox Series X|S was 81% below Xbox 360’s January–September 2011 performance and 45% below Xbox One’s January–September 2019 result.

The Circana comparison measures US retail tracking data rather than global console sales. It also follows an earlier Circana report that US Xbox hardware unit sales had reached a record low through August 2026.

Which comparison matters more to you: cumulative lifetime sales or each console’s current yearly momentum?
