OverDrive, an unofficial storefront advertised as providing access to more than 1,600 PS4 and PS5 games for jailbroken consoles, is no longer operating, and its original GitHub repository is unavailable. Reports have linked the shutdown to possible legal pressure from Sony Interactive Entertainment, but that connection has not been confirmed.
The claim traces to an October 13 post from Oliver Darko, which said Sony lawyers had reportedly sent OverDrive operators a cease-and-desist letter. The post did not include the letter or another document supporting that claim. We could not identify eXtas1s as the original source of the report; the verifiable post circulating the allegation came from Darko.
Two parts of the story can be independently observed: the original half144/overdrive-releases GitHub address now returns a 404 error, while the storefront has been reported closed. Those facts do not establish why the service shut down or who requested the repository removal.
Sony has not publicly confirmed sending a legal notice, OverDrive operators have not published one, and no public cease-and-desist document has surfaced. Until one of those parties provides evidence, Sony’s reported involvement should be treated as an unverified claim rather than a confirmed enforcement action.
How should platform holders respond when unauthorized storefronts appear for jailbroken consoles?
