Metaphor: ReFantazio Nintendo Switch 2 Demo Has a Strange Image Quality Bug

The Metaphor: ReFantazio demo on Nintendo Switch 2 shows an unusual image-quality problem in docked mode, according to Digital Foundry’s technical analysis.

In its video breakdown, Digital Foundry found that static scenes can display a stepped vertical pattern that makes the image look unusually wide and uneven. Horizontal detail remains sharper, creating what the outlet described as an image resembling 2560×720 in some still frames.

The effect appears to settle once the camera moves. Digital Foundry suggested that the behavior could involve the game’s temporal anti-aliasing or upscaling method, but that remains a theory rather than a confirmed diagnosis from Atlus or Sega.

The analysis estimates an internal resolution of roughly 1280×720 while docked and around 960×540 in portable play. Frame rate is unlocked between 30 and 60 frames per second, but the Nintendo Switch 2 version does not use variable refresh rate. Digital Foundry still judged the PlayStation 5 version better overall, while noting that the new handheld conversion improves on the PlayStation 4 release in some areas.

Nintendo Life also covered the findings ahead of the full Nintendo Switch 2 release on November 12, 2026. Because the footage comes from a demo, the final version could still receive changes before launch.

Would this image-quality issue stop you from choosing Metaphor: ReFantazio on Nintendo Switch 2?
