MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls Adds Phoenix Cyclops on November 2

Phoenix Cyclops will join MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls on November 2 as both the first post-launch DLC character and the first fighter included in the Year 1 Pass. Voiced by Ray Chase, this version combines Cyclops’ Optic Blasts with the Phoenix Force and can transform into Dark Phoenix during a match.

Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamanaka detailed the fighter in the official PlayStation Blog announcement. Cyclops’ “Classic” and “Legacy” DLC costumes will also become available on November 2.

Why Arc System Works chose Phoenix Cyclops

Yamanaka said Cyclops was an early candidate for the Unbreakable X-Men team, but his look and fighting style were already well established through earlier Marvel fighting games. The team wanted to add something new to that history, and its narrative group proposed the Phoenix version as a way to create fresher visuals, a less familiar interpretation of Scott Summers, and a more distinctive move set. The Classic and Legacy costumes are intended for players who still prefer his better-known appearances.

How Phoenix Cyclops plays

Phoenix Cyclops is an all-rounder who can fight at long range with varied Optic Blasts and at close range with rushing attacks, throws, and setup tools. Phoenix Force abilities add wide-area fire attacks that can control large parts of the screen.

Using Optic Blast techniques builds Phoenix Force energy called Solar Shards. Collecting four Solar Shards allows Cyclops to transform into Dark Phoenix, granting a significant temporary power increase while steadily depleting his health. Managing that tradeoff is central to the character’s design.

Players attending EVO France from October 9–11 can try Phoenix Cyclops before release. The announcement also coincides with the game’s first-ever PlayStation Store sale, which discounts the Ultimate Edition, and a three-hour trial for PlayStation Plus members beginning October 7.

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is available on PlayStation 5 and PC.

Will Phoenix Cyclops’ Dark Phoenix risk-and-reward mechanic earn him a place on your team?
