itch.io Deletes Terabytes of AI Content and Expands Generative AI Filters

itch.io says it has removed a couple of terabytes of low-quality generative AI uploads after a surge of new project pages strained the independent game marketplace. The storefront is also expanding the tools visitors can use to identify and filter projects that disclose generative AI use.

In an official Bluesky post, itch.io said the number of pages created on the site had doubled over roughly two weeks. The company later clarified that downloads and purchases had not doubled, pointing instead to a flood of newly created listings.

The platform subsequently said it had deleted a couple of terabytes of content it characterized as AI-generated spam. itch.io did not provide a project count, and the storage figure should not be read as a measure of how many individual listings were removed.

itch.io is also separating generative AI disclosures into more specific categories and adding them to search filters. Its updated disclosure system distinguishes between different types of generated material, while a follow-up post confirmed filtering support in search results. The changes give creators a clearer way to label their work and let players narrow results according to their preferences.

The cleanup fits the marketplace’s existing quality guidelines, which are intended to keep discovery useful and discourage pages that offer little value to visitors.

Will expanded disclosure filters make it easier for you to find human-made projects on itch.io?
