Former PlayStation Boss Warns Against Launching a PS6 Handheld Alongside a Home Console

Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden believes Sony could have a strong opportunity with a next-generation handheld, but he has warned that launching one alongside a PS6 home console could split the company’s attention and resources.

Speaking on The Trophy Room: A PlayStation Show, Layden argued that a portable-focused generation could give Sony “a good chance of winning.” His concern is the difficulty of supporting and marketing two new pieces of hardware at the same time.

Layden’s assessment draws on PlayStation’s earlier experience running home consoles alongside the PSP and PS Vita. In his view, the larger home-console business can command more internal attention and marketing money, leaving the portable platform with less support even when it has an audience.

The comments are Layden’s personal analysis, not an announcement from Sony. The company has not confirmed a PS6 handheld, a launch plan, technical specifications, or a release date for its next generation of PlayStation hardware.

That distinction matters because current discussion around a possible PS6 portable is still based on reports and speculation. Layden’s remarks address the strategic trade-offs Sony would face if it pursued two devices rather than revealing what the company has decided.

We previously covered reporting about AMD winning Sony’s next-generation chip contract, but the final shape of the hardware remains unannounced.

Would you prefer Sony to focus on a PS6 home console, a dedicated handheld, or a shared hardware family?
