Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden believes rights approvals and the challenge of matching the original game’s impact may help explain why Sony has not moved forward publicly with Bloodborne 2.
Speaking on The Trophy Room: A PlayStation Show, Layden said any return would need to respect the original while also answering whether the team could recreate the phenomenon around it. Insider Gaming’s report on the interview highlighted his view that approvals may be the larger obstacle.
“There’s a lot of involved rights associated with it,” Layden said. He pointed to Sony, FromSoftware, and FromSoftware’s parent company as parties that would need to agree, adding that obtaining every required sign-off is probably the biggest challenge.
Those remarks are Layden’s personal assessment. They do not confirm that a sequel was proposed, rejected, canceled, or placed into development, and neither Sony nor FromSoftware has announced Bloodborne 2.
The original Bloodborne launched for PlayStation 4 in 2015 and remains the subject of frequent requests for a sequel, remaster, or PC version. We previously covered fan-led emulation progress for the original game, but that work is separate from any official PlayStation project.
Would you rather see Bloodborne 2 next, or a modern remaster of the original game?
