Electronic Arts has canceled the next Mass Effect project and is closing BioWare, ending more than 30 years of game development at the studio.
In an official company announcement, EA said a small BioWare team had been working on the project in early development. The publisher decided not to move forward with that work and said it is closing both the studio and its Edmonton workspace.
EA described BioWare as a “legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre” and said the decision was not taken lightly.
BioWare separately confirmed the news in its own studio update, stating that BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.
The studio reflected on a history spanning more than three decades and named Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Anthem among the worlds created during that time.
The announcement brings the next Mass Effect’s development to an end at an early stage while also closing the studio responsible for some of the best-known role-playing games of the past three decades.
Which BioWare game or series has meant the most to you over the studio’s history?
