Call of Duty has surpassed $40 billion in lifetime franchise revenue, according to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.

Sharma announced the milestone shortly after the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. In a statement reported by PC Gamer, she congratulated the Activision team and thanked players for supporting the series.

The figure covers the full lifetime of the Call of Duty franchise. It does not represent revenue generated by Modern Warfare 4 alone, even though Sharma shared the total while discussing the new game’s reception.

No breakdown accompanied the announcement, so it is not clear how much of the total came from individual releases, downloadable content, in-game purchases, mobile entries, or other parts of the business. The milestone instead provides a single cumulative figure for the franchise since the original Call of Duty launched in 2003.

Activision is now part of Microsoft following the company’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Call of Duty continues to be one of its largest gaming properties, with releases spanning consoles and PC.

The timing makes the distinction especially important: Modern Warfare 4 arrived shortly before the announcement, but the $40 billion total reflects more than two decades of Call of Duty releases and player spending.

Which era of Call of Duty do you think contributed most to the franchise reaching $40 billion?
