Ace Combat 8 Story Trailer Confirms Annihilation Battle Mode

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve will bring back Annihilation Battle missions when it launches for PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2026. A new story trailer also introduces the crew of The Endurance, rival Sotoan pilots and two of the campaign’s large-scale threats.

The official Bandai Namco breakdown on PlayStation Blog shows quieter moments aboard The Endurance alongside the war surrounding its crew. In the air, the trailer sets up a clash between the Federation of Central Usea’s Joker Flight, led by the pilot known as the Wings of Theve, and Shadow 22, leader of the elite Sotoan Air Force Shadows Unit.

How Annihilation Battle works in Ace Combat 8

Ace Combat 8’s seventh mission is an Annihilation Battle, a returning mission type built around destroying as many targets as possible within a time limit. Players can choose their own route and target order while deciding when to cross the return line to reload.

The revealed operation is a counterattack against Sotoan forces. Its target list includes a solar power plant, oil tanks, an air base and an ammunition dump, with supply lines available to replenish weapons during the mission.

Chain destruction adds another tactical choice. Hitting a flammable target such as an oil tank can trigger explosions that destroy nearby buildings, while a downed enemy aircraft can also damage structures around its crash site. That makes the order and timing of each attack more important than simply clearing isolated targets.

Megafloat Fatsia and Tonitrus Spear

Bandai Namco also detailed two threats outside the Annihilation mission. Megafloat Fatsia is a six-kilometer artificial island off the Republic of Sotoa’s west coast. It serves as an arms factory and landing-invasion supply station, with a 2,000-meter runway on its upper deck.

The facility’s defenses include CIWS, surface-to-air missile batteries and railguns connected to defensive aircraft. UAV sensor nodes extend its defensive reach to a radius of 400 kilometers.

Tonitrus Spear is a kinetic attack satellite operating at an altitude of 500 kilometers. Rather than carrying a nuclear payload, it accelerates dense metal rods toward targets to cause wide-area destruction without radioactive fallout. The announcement says players will need to evade its attacks during the campaign.
