PS5 Is the Fastest-Selling Console in U.S. History

PlayStation 5 is the fastest-selling console in US history by dollar sales, but is the second best-selling hardware platform in February 2021, where Nintendo Switch continues to lead the market.

NPD Group has released its monthly report in the US for February 2021, which includes top-selling consoles, video games, and more, and Nintendo Switch is leading the charge as the best-selling console of the month with the PS5 in second place. However, the PS5 surpassed a record previously held by the Switch when it became the fastest-selling console in US history after NPD Group followed total dollar sales after four months on the market.

Unit and dollar sales for the Switch last month were the highest of any hardware platform in February since the Nintendo Wii in February 2009. Switch’s lifetime dollar sales also surpassed those of the Nintendo DS last month, making the Switch second. It is the best-selling Nintendo console in the US after the Wii, and the seventh best-selling console overall.

Consumer spending of video game numbers has been increasing substantially. “February 2021 consumer spending for video game hardware, content, and accessories reached the February record of $ 4.6 billion, up 35% from a year ago,” NPD Group’s report said. “Year-to-date spending totaled $ 9.3 billion, 39% higher than in the same period of 2020.”

On the software side, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury ranked # 1 best-selling game in the US in February 2021 and also became the second best-selling game of 2021 for Nintendo despite the lack of digital sales tracking. Released in February, Little Nightmares II was the sixth best-selling game of the month, the fifth best-selling game on Xbox platforms, and the 10th best-selling game on PlayStation platforms.

In the US, video game accessory spending reached $ 195 million in February 2021, 41% higher than last February, and the PS5 DualSense controller became the top-dollar-selling accessory of the month.
