The Long Dark Story Mode Details and Release Date

The Long Wait, they should name it.

Hinterland’s first-person open world survival simulation The Long Dark is a gorgeous work of art with cruel survival elements and of course, mesmerizing sunsets.

The Long Dark takes place in the frigid Canadian wilderness and we are a crash-landed pilot who is trying to survive this frozen disaster. While playing The Long Dark, body temperature, caloric intake, hunger/thirst, fatigue, wind-chill, wildlife, and a host of other environmental factors always matter and must be taken care of.

We are playing the sandbox for a long time now and waiting for the story mode. Hinterland was planning a late 2014 launch for story mode, later it was pushed to late 2016. Previously, they’ve launched a mysterious countdown and we were guessing it was for the story mode. Seems like we were right.

On August 1, the two episodes of The Long Dark’s five-part ‘Wintermute’ story mode will be available. I hope that it will be as perfect and cruel as the sandbox.

The Story Mode’s first two episodes will tell the story of pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood getting separated in the wilderness.

Episode 1: Do Not Go Gentle: Mackenzie tries to survive the savage wilderness long enough to find shelter, hoping for the comforts civilization might bring. He quickly learns the world around him is not what he expected.

Episode 2: Luminance Fugue: Mackenzie begins to understand the true nature of the disaster he finds himself in, all the while searching for signs of Astrid. He also begins to learn the answer to the question, “how far will you go to survive?”, as he navigates relationships with the other survivors he meets along the way.

Total gameplay for the two episodes will be different since it is an open and beautiful world but Hinterland estimated that it mostly takes 6-10 hours.

Another big news is that The Long Dark will be available on PlayStation 4, too. Along with that, Sandbox Mode will get an upgrade named Faithful Cartographer before the story mode hits. You can read the full update notes from here.

“See you in the quiet apocalypse.”
