Upcoming Steampunk Survival by This War of Mine Devs – Frostpunk

A new title from the fathers of survival genre.

If you’ve played This War of Mine, this piece of news must be exciting you more than anyone. While creating This War of Mine, 11 bit studios was inspired by the 1992–96 Siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, but they created awareness by focusing on the civilian experience of war rather than frontline combat. A great achievement, if you ask my opinion.

11 bit studios is on our agenda again with their upcoming steampunk survival game, Frostpunk. Maybe you can resist survival, but you can’t resist steampunk survival. Frostpunk dares you, Frostpunk double dares you fellow gamers!

When we say 11 bit studios, the first thing comes to our mind is ‘a different point of view’. Even though the genre is popular in game industry, we have no doubt that the game will differ from the others. This War of Mine is set in a war zone and it is a survival like most of the other games, but looking through the eyes of civilians changed the whole picture for us. Again, with Frostpunk, 11 bit studios aims to create meaningful games with new perspectives on well-known themes.

Before anything else, you must know that 11 bit studios’ games are emotionally challenging. Frostpunk will push you to the limits and make you think on such matters that you carefully try to espace from while you are in your comfort zone.

Frostpunk takes on what people are capable of when pushed to the limits. How survival can reshape the society. For worse, better, stronger, weaker or, last but not least, more or less humane – that is debatable.

Frostpunk is set in a frozen world and to soften the blow of this overwhelming cold, people invented steam-powered technology. Now we are talking! This theme reminded me of the movie Snowpiercer where climate-change experiment kills all life on the planet with extreme snow and some people were lucky enough to get in a never-stopping train named Snowpiercer. Frostpunk’s gameplay revolves around the last remaining city on Earth. We are the leader of its citizens and the infrastructure they live in.

Steampunk is not only added to the game as a visual theme, but as a tool of survival. In Dante’s Inferno, the ninth and deepest circle of hell is cold. The last remaining city of Frostpunk is cold as Dante’s hell and to ease the pain, steam-powered machines are essential.

Frostpunk is described as a strategic game which challenges player’s tactical skills and questioning player’s morality. Well, the burden is heavy, but management of the city and society is not your only problem here. There are other parts of the game which will make you explore.

The new Whiteout trailer will give you a chance of better understanding of Frostpunk’s harsh world. Oh, possibly it will give you goose bumps, too. Here, take a look:
