Overstep Kickstarter Campaign is Live!

“Action, destruction and mayhem in a bottle.” The definition of Overstep’s Kickstarter campaign starts with this lovely sentence. A great way to summarize a multiplayer free-to-play FPS, isn’t it?

Overstep, the “first son” of the indie studio Gamecan; is a free, fast-paced online shooter with an old-school heart. Building its gameplay on combos, corporations and spoils of war; the game focuses mainly on the intense combat in a science-fiction setting.

Its story is about the human greed in basic terms, a sum of money changing hands between corporations and mercenaries under the roof of a tournament. Here is how it goes:

When man reached out to the stars, they reached back. The early colonists on Mars discovered an ancient Peregrinus ruins containing technology unheard of at the time. Humanity used this knowledge to spread and drain new worlds of resources bringing with it new heights and new depths. They found Elido, a planet rich in exotic materials, technology and ruins of the Peregrinus. Their former home, now desolated and returned to nature. Humanity started fighting itself for the riches the world contained, corporate greed reached fever pitch.

…And we will be one of the Vanguards figting in this intergalactic tournament called Overstep, laying waste to the other competitors, in style.

Aside from the stunning visual capability of Unreal Engine 4, the developers have some goals about the competitive foundation of Overstep. Thus; in order to achieve this goals, Gamecan started a Kickstarter campaign which you can support its development process. What are the development goals of this project? You can take a glance at them yourself in the project page, but here is a brief summary:

  • A carreer and prestige system that gives bonuses for everything you do: Jumping, doing combos, wall running, etc. And while doing these one of the three companies in the game (Tycho: Weapons and Arms, Phase and The Gunn Corporation) will be in touch with you with discounts and special offers.
  • A gameplay which will combine the “pacing and natural feeling” of the old shooters with the “fluidity” of modern ones. That is a great aspect that so few games care about nowadays (Bulletstorm, anyone?)
  • A crafting system that allows you to create armor and weapons, and put them on the marketplace. When other players use the equipment created by you, there will be benefits.
  • Overstep is planned to be released on PC and shortly after that, Xbox One. It is currenty on Steam Greenlight by the way, you can vote from here.
  • EpicVoiceGuy will do a voiceover for your own nickname if you pledge €700 or more (limited to 50 names).

Here is the pre-alpha gameplay trailer:

Now lets come down to the objectivity: The game is in a very early stage of development, as you can observe from the gifs and videos; also we can clearly see why developers need the money (animations, sounds, design details, etc.). Ideas presented in the project are good, therefore they can have their own place in this competitive shooter genre which was skyrocketed by the coming of Overwatch. Being free and promising that the game will never become a pay-to-win case can earn Overstep a solid place between the other competitive shooters which blatantly copy Overwatch (yes, I am looking at you, Paladins).

So, if you want to support this independent studio consisted of five ambitious members, take look at their Kickstarter page. Have fun, and support the independent!

(By the way, developers have a statement to share: “Just (a) name similarity, and (the) same genre.” Heh, I wouldn’t notice if I didn’t read the FAQ, and that is a good thing in my terms.)
