The Land of Pain – An Atmospheric Lovecraftian Horror Adventure

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.

― H.P. Lovecraft, Supernatural Horror in Literature

H.P. Lovecraft; one of the most significant 20th-century authors, the father of cosmic horrors, source of our nightmares, creator of Cthulhu mythos. And finally, his stories are becoming the subject of high quality games.

Like Cthulhu‘s sphere of influence, Lovecraft has a sphere of doubt surrounding him. Creating a game based on a Lovecraft story or reflecting Lovecraftian terrors in a game is always something we must treat with caution because it means entering the danger zone which Lovecraft stands in the middle. The main reason behind all this doubt is the kind of fear Lovecraft fed us. In every book, Lovecraft planted the seeds of terror in our minds not by creating bloody and messy scenes, but letting a terror grow in our hearts until it explodes. Even most of his characters are not able to clarify what he saw or what really happened since the terror was inexpressibly grand. This is the part which is so hard to reflect in a game. Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn!

Lately, thanks to the people who admire the works and Lovecraft, we get to enjoy high-quality games based on his stories. The Land of Pain is a story driven atmospheric horror adventure game mostly influenced by Cthulhu mythos and set in a Lovecraftian atmosphere. The Land of Pain takes a huge step when it comes to creating a Lovecraftian terror, reflecting the fear of unknown, creating a mysterious atmosphere and disturbing scenes with CryEngine.

Fear of the unknown, like I said at the very beginning, will hunt you while playing The Land of Pain. Well, clearly something else is after you, but I like the idea that we can’t really see what it is or who it is. We see its works with blood and bodies, what remains after it’s finished and we let fear fill our veins.

Another mesmerizing thing about The Land of Pain is the fact that only one person created this game. Alessandro Guzzo, creator of the game tried to create a gameplay focused on story, investigation and atmosphere.

After successfully Greenlit in just 9 days by the community, The Land of Pain will hit Steam in 2017. The page is live, you can go ahead and add it to your wishlist by visiting here.

Enjoy!
